  • Description:
    • From this point on, I hit the hiking trails pretty hard and tried to get out as often as possible.  My route finding skills were not fine tuned though, and I sort of got skunked on this hike to Chimney Rock.
    • My main form of transportation so far has been a 1989 Honda CRX.  The perfect college car, it got great gas mileage, and it doesn't have a backseat, so I never had to drive on road trips.  But, anyone familiar with mountain roads and the high drive knows that this type of vehicle won't cut it out there.  I drove up Pack River Road as far as I could and fortunately Mark (?) picked me up.  After his dog beat up on Payton a little, we found the trailhead and were off.
    • Chimney Rock is a stone tower that can be reached from the Pack River Drainage area (east route) or from the Priest River (ID) side (west route).  It is a popular site for people who like technical climbing and is actually on the cover of the book I refer to on my home page.
    • The hike didn't seem too difficult where we went, but after running out of trail and bush wacking a while, we decided to call it a day and figured we missed a turn somewhere.  Mark offered me a couple of hits of pot (which I declined) and we returned to the trailhead.  It was an enjoyable day hike and I plan on returning sometime to actually reach the base of Chimney Rock from this direction.  After having to be picked up because of my car,  I began devising a plan to get myself a North Idaho "rig".
  • Maps:
    • The first map is more of a general overview of the area.  I tried to zoom closer in on the second one.

  • Photographs:
    • This is a distant picture of Chimney Rock from the Pack River Road.  You would take this road to get to the Bee Hive Lakes and Harrison Lake also.
