  • Description:
    • We decided to start out 1999 by trying our luck with Harrison Lake again.  If you remember from the north route description, we didn't actually make it to the lake, so we were even more determined than ever.
    • This enthusiasm didn't last too long when we almost got stuck in the snow 3 or 4 times on the way up Pack River Road.  Fortunately, we had the Trooper to blaze a trail, but when the 4 wheeling got a bit too crazy, we opted to stop and make the hike longer rather that rolling down the side of the mountain and total my vehicle.
    • The trail was snow covered from the start, but for the first 2 to 3 miles, you could still distinguish the trail.  After that it was like the blind leading the blind.  The snow was too deep to recognize the trail.  We went up one ridge, down another, through these trees, and to the left of those rocks with no success in locating the lake.  Using our combat ready survival skills, we just started climbing, and when we finally got to a clearing, we both peered down into a bowl and simultaneously picked out Harrison Lake.  It was still completely frozen over with no open water.
    • At last we conquered this hike and could move on.  After locating the lake, we rushed down for some lunch, rest, and photos.  It is hard to judge the difficulty considering the conditions we hiked it in, but I think it would have been moderate (I was actually pretty beat).  We hung out for a while and then the fun began as Payton, Brendon, and I boot-skied back down a portion of the way.  Needless to say, the return was much faster and a lot less work.
    • On the drive back down, a family was stuck in one of the locations we drove through.  Of course there was nothing to worry about, we simply hooked a tow rope up to the Trooper and pulled their Chevy Blazer out.   The make and model of the stuck vehicle doesn't surprise me.  Anyway, we had some hiking under our belt fairly early in 1999 and we moved on.
