- Description:
- Butler Mountain is located
approximately 5 miles east of Cocallala (ID). This was another
appealing Spring hike because of the lower elevation and the close proximity
to home. This hike is to the north of Three Sisters Peaks, and
some of the photos look similar with the exception of the direction they
are taken from. As you can tell from the statistics, it was a
relatively difficult hike.
- From the first step of the trail
to the top of the ridge, this was a relentless hike that did not provide
any long gentle switchbacks for easy walking. I was expecting a
strenuous hike, but this one takes the cake. When the grade is as
difficult as it was on this hike, it is hard to get into a consistent
rhythm. I kept looking ahead at the trail waiting to see it level
off for a small break, but it didn't happen until you were to the
top. After a while, I just stared at my feet only glancing up to
take in the view to the west.
- Just below the ridge, the trail
was covered with snow for most of the way to Butler Mountain. I
would only catch sections of the tread here and there, so I left a
"bread crumb trail" of twigs sticking up in my path to help me
navigate on my return. After reaching the ridge, I was graciously
rewarded with spectacular views of Lake Pend Oreille.
- Payton and I played around in
the snow for a while and I took my photos and then we headed back
down. Unfortunately, the descent was as problematic as the
ascent. My weary legs took a beating, and needless to say, I was
pretty tired even if I was only out for just over four miles.

- Photographs:
- More views of Pend
Oreille Lake facing the east. I have to say that the photos
from my last two hikes have turned out pretty good.
- This photo is more towards the southeast
towards Schafer Peak.
- Here is a picture of the snow
cap that Payton and I played around on. It appears as though
Payton is more interested in the wood pecker that was knocking on a tree
in the area.
