  • Description:
    • If you read the description from the last hike, you are aware that I am out of my element experiencing some different country in southwestern Utah.  Observation Point is also located inside of Zion National Park and this hike offers many of the same views as Angel's Landing.  This hike is a bit longer and doesn't require the use of your hands.
    • After descending Angel's Landing and having some lunch, I started off on another hike.  The Observation Point trail starts out relatively aggressive, and I would estimate that all of the elevation gain is made in the first three miles before reaching the east rim where it levels off.  I made it to the terminus of this hike in 2 hours and didn't spend a whole lot of time there due to the deteriorating weather.
    • I spent part of my day with a group of college kids from South Carolina.  They were all majoring in geology and were visiting this area of the country for a few weeks this spring.  I also visited with an older couple who told me about there trip to the Himalayas.  I hope I am still on the trail when I am 50 and 60 years old.
    • A few showers rolled through during the afternoon, and I simply laughed at the fools in flip flops and tank tops as I put my rain jacket on and relaced my hiking boots.  Talk about being under prepared.
    • Anyway, I observed from Observation Point and headed back to the trailhead where I took the rest of the bus trip to the end of the Zion Canyon and back to the visitor center where my hot Chevy Metro was waiting for me.  I drove back to St. George, bought my wife and kids something at the Old Navy outlet store, had a steak and a beer, and hit the sack.  The next morning, I drove to Las Vegas and flew back to Spokane.
  • Maps:
    • Here is the park map of the area I hiked in.  To the north the canyon ends and is only wide enough for the Virgin River, which is where the "Narrows" hike begins.  To the south is the park entrance.
