- Date Hiked: August 18, 2001
- Miles Hiked: 9.6
- Elevation Gain: 2,860'
- Hiking Partner(s): None
- Description:
- There are 9 peaks in Idaho over 12,000', and this is number nine on the
12er list. I didn't make it to the summit, so I still have one
down
with eight to go.
- This was my first attempt at Hyndman Peak than went
wrong from the start. After reading the limited resources I had on
the hike and mapping a trail on my software and GPS, I thought I was
more than prepared to conquer my second 12,000' peak.
Unfortunately, things didn't go as smoothly as planned.
- Instead of going to Hyndman
Peak, which is approximately 15-20 miles northeast of Sun Valley, I
ended up hiking along the north fork of Hyndman Creek below Pioneer
Cabin and then bush wacking to 9,700' before seeing Hyndman Basin and
locating the correct route. The combination of being unfamiliar
with the area, plotting the incorrect route, and getting bad information
at the trailhead resulted in a lot of cross country hiking and no
summit.
- I left Boise around 10:00 pm on
the 17th and finally reached the trailhead at 1:00 in the morning.
After a short night in the back of the Trooper, I was ready to take on
Hyndman. Anyway, rather than heading due
east on the obvious trail, I took off north on the west bank of the
north fork of Hyndman Creek. I followed this trail until I started
climbing west which would have likely taken me to Pioneer Cabin.
From here, I began my trekking east to a remote lake and on to a saddle
located to the south of Hyndman Peak which overlooked Hyndman
Basin. By the time I got here and realized where I went wrong, it
was late in the day so I simply bush wacked further east and found the
correct trail to take me back out to the trailhead.
- Needless to say, I was
disappointed that I didn't make it to the summit, but I'll just chalk
it up to experience and return another day.
- Maps:
- As you can see, if I would have
just spent a bit more time with my guide book, the correct trail would
have been very apparent. The 3D map is facing north.

- I don't have any photos to post
from this hike. My next hike was actually to Hyndman Peak, so you
can view pictures of the area from that description.
