- Description:
- Blacktail Mountain is located
approximately 5 miles east of Cocallala (ID). The crew was back up
in Sandpoint (ID) so we decided to go out on another small hike.
We settled on Blacktail Mountain because of the lower elevation and the
close proximity to Sandpoint (ID).
- I had previously been on this trail, but continued on the ridge all
the way to Butler Mountain in 2000. This hike almost didn't occur
after we almost ran out of gas on the way to the trailhead. We
forgot to fill up before we got to Cocallala (ID), so we decided to see
how far we could go. After we had all decided to call no joy, we
decided to park the van and walk up the road. Low and behold, we
were only 200 yards short of the trailhead, so we started up the trail.
- The trail had been worked on since I was last in the area. The
forest service had added a significant amount of switchbacks making the
hike more manageable. It appeared as though the trail received a
lot of motor bike and ATV use. Anyway, it took us 1 hour to get to
the top and 35 minutes to get back down.
- Maps:
- Blacktail Mountain isn't marked on the 3D map. I simply used the
same maps from the Butler Mountain hike.
