After completing the Idaho 12ers in August of 2003, I
needed to find another hiking goal. I ended up moving to Denver in the
Fall, so naturally I turned my attention to the Colorado 14ers. A
co-worker of mine had already given me Gerry Roach's "Colorado's
Fourteeners" book some time ago, so I started to do some reading to see
what I was up against. I determined that I would like to complete them
all by the time I was 40 (10 years) and attempt to complete at least one
difficult peak each year so they don't pile up on me towards the end.
At this point, I'm slightly ahead of schedule because I
have been able to complete several easy mountains over the past winter and
spring. As of May, I have also climbed a difficult peak for
2004. With my climb of Mount Rainier on July 31, 2004, I equaled
my mileage and elevation gain totals from 2003.
In the interest of my marriage and career, the 2004 hiking
season has officially come to a close as of the end of September. I'm
extremely happy with the year's results and feel as though I
accomplished quite a bit in 2004. I'm going to hang up the old hiking
shoes for a while and change my priorities for the Fall and Winter.
