Base Camp

  • There are really only 52 official Colorado 14ers.  Although El Diente Peak and North Maroon Peak don't meet the generally accepted definition of a 14er based on relief or distance from surrounding peaks, they are widely included in the 14er list because of difficulty.  More recently, Challenger Point has also become a sentimental favorite which brings the total to 55.  I have seen other lists that also add North Massive, Cameron Peak, Conundrum Peak, and North Eolus to the rank of a 14er.

  • I have been on the summit of all 59 of these peaks, but I'm sure some people would argue that I haven't "climbed" them all because I didn't start 3,000' below each summit.  There is only one peak that isn't a traverse that I didn't gain 3,000' on because I plan on returning to climb a route I initially planned on utilizing but couldn't because of conditions.  A couple of hikes use cumulative gain to get the 3,000', and two other trips cumulatively gained 6,000' for two 14ers.  I consider both of these circumstances personally acceptable for "climbing" and could easily argue routes and difficulty over feet and elevation gain with regard to actually "climbing" a mountain.  As far as the seven or so peaks I climbed as traverses that didn't gain 3,000', maybe I'll return, maybe I won't.
