For your reference, from 1998 to mid 2001 most of my
hiking took place in the Selkirk
and Cabinet Mountains of northern Idaho. After July of 2001, I moved to
Boise and the hiking shifted to southern and
eastern Idaho. I moved to Colorado at the end of the 2003, so 2004 and
2005 will consist of
reports primarily of 14ers. Of course, there are always a few trips outside
of Idaho and Colorado.
In terms of difficulty, I would have to say that the
earlier hikes from 1998 to 2000 are Class 1 and 2 trail hikes to small
lakes or low peaks. I stuck to the trail for most of 2001, but got a bit braver towards the end of
the summer climbing Mount Borah and Hyndman Peak, two Idaho 12ers. After the snow
melted in 2002, I completely abandoned the trail and spent the summer
scrambling and bushwhacking mostly off trail with plenty of Class
3 hikes. The 2003
hiking season is similar to 2002 and also has a couple of Grade II snow climbs.
Since I will likely try and hike 14ers during 2004 and beyond , the difficulty will
likely range from Class 1 trail hiking to Class 3
scrambling.

I've also done some moderate to steep snow climbs and some Class 4
climbs on a few peaks. In 2006, I even went ice climbing a couple of
times and spent more time rock climbing.
